Sliding window vs fixed window
Why does a fixed-window rate limiter allow a traffic spike at window boundaries?
Options
- 1Because tokens refill continuously within the window, so a client sending near the boundary is throttled before exceeding the cap
- 2Because the counter is stored in Redis, whose eventual consistency means two windows can read different totals at the boundary
- 3Because the window size is configurable, a client can request a larger window and legitimately double the requests it may send
- 4A client can send the full limit at the end of one window and again at the start of the next, doubling the effective rate over the boundary
