Capacity estimation: peak vs average
You size a system for 10M daily active users each making 20 read requests/day. Why must you size for peak, not average QPS?
Options
- 1Traffic concentrates in peaks (often 5-10x the average); provisioning for the mean causes overload and cascading failure during spikes
- 2Average QPS is impossible to compute reliably because the request rate varies far too much to be meaningfully averaged
- 3Peak QPS is always exactly 2x the average, so it can always be derived directly from the daily request total
- 4Storage is the only resource that matters, so CPU and network can both be safely sized from the daily average
