Distributed rate limiting consistency
A fleet of rate limiters using only local in-memory counters will fail to enforce a global limit because:
Options
- 1The clock on each node is monotonic, so the counters drift and the aggregate limit uses different time origins
- 2The counter overflows at 1000 per node, so requests past that point wrap around and are admitted uncounted
- 3Redis is single threaded per node, so each node's increments run serially and never coordinate with other nodes
- 4Each node enforces the limit independently, allowing up to N times the intended global rate
